KEEPSAKE: Recent work by April VanDeGrift and Erin Cunningham
April VanDeGrift and Erin Cunningham have shared more than a decade together in the studio. Over this time, the two artists have held verbal and visual conversations about material, artistic, and social concerns and have produced work independently as well as collaboratively. Keepsake represents the latest work produced in their artistic endeavors and shared interests.
Reflecting on their personal relationships to the subjects they depict, each artist strives to make a connection to the historical or cultural significance of certain materials. VanDeGrift focuses primarily on botanical subjects with significant historical applications, while Cunningham is compelled by paper remnants of disappearing material culture. Their works are connected by a shared meditation on ephemerality, loss, and decay as a means of developing a more intentional and meaningful connection to the present.
