Frankly Burlesque presents Subversive Dreams

Next:

Frankly Burlesque presents Subversive Dreams, an evening of individual burlesque and performance art vignettes. Woven together by the demonstratively delightful, internationally renowned, cabaret emcee, DisCharge (Bristol, UK), and set upon the scenic design of Michael Baltzell, Subversive Dreams highlights the expression of individual ideals, dreams, and lifestyles that dissent from the societally imposed notion of normal. Subversive Dreams is headlined by Jo “Boobs” Weldon (NYC), featuring Lola Love (San Francisco) and Ophelia Wilde (Bristol, UK), with a host of national and local performers who don’t conform the culturally defined normal: people of color, LGBTQIA, alter-abled, women, sex workers, people of size.

Pay What You Want Ticketing: What is Pay What You Want, or PWYW?

YOU pay what YOU choose to access great art. For this show, the minimum is $5 to cover online fees and other costs.

Why the PWYW model?

Money should not control access to art. The entire premise of Subversive Dreams is to live outside the box and to recognize that capitalism, white supremacy, patriarchy, and other oppressive systems manufacture perceived “norms” and feed them to us as fact. Money is an artificial and oppressive construct. We use the PWYW model as one way to resist that divisive structure and increase access to art.

Featured Performers:

Jo Boobs (NYC)

Jo Weldon, aka Jo Boobs, is a pioneer in the neo-burlesque movement, a strip joint stripper since 1980 who became a touring feature dancer and fetish performer, then joined the New York Burlesque community in the 1990s. Since then, she has toured the world as a burlesque performer, rounding her heels on stages from Coney Island to Sydney Harbor. She has appeared on the list of 21st Century Burlesque’s Top 50 Burlesque Industry Figures every year for ten years. She founded and has been running the New York School of Burlesque since 2004, and is the author of The Burlesque Handbook, the first book ever published on how to create classic and neo-burlesque routines. She has produced six burlesque instructional video programs with World Dance New York, is a founding member and Vice-President of BurlyCon, and co-executive director of Education at The Burlesque Hall of Fame. She believes in burlesque as a means to introduce those who are shy about their bodies to enjoy the power of playful and/or confrontational exhibitionism, as well as creativity and self-expression through self-initiated theatrical performance. She has been an influential sex workers’ rights advocate for over two decades. Her newest book, FIERCE: The History of Leopard Print, is available as of June 2018.

Lola Love (Honolulu)

California native Lola Love is a sultry siren who will saunter into your heart. Lola’s theatrical, innovative, and sultry striptease has been dazzling audiences across the US since 2006.

Lola is a life-long dancer who never quite felt at home until she discovered African based dance forms. She is trained in Brazilian Samba, Congolese and West African dance. She has performed as a professional samba dancer for 15 years. Lola is a pioneer of neo-burlesque in Hawaii, co-founding the very first neo-burlesque troupe in the state. When not stomping around on the stage or stomping on patriarchy, Lola can be found behind the scenes writing or directing scripted burlesque shows. She is the newest producing member of Chicago’s Vertical Sideshow and the Executive Director of BurlyCon.

DisCharge (UK)

Mixing gothic glamour with wicked wit and live sung renditions of rock, blues, jazz and opera as well as a repertoire of lip-synch pieces for any occasion, DisCharge has garnered acclaim from organisations such as Vienna boylesque Festival, Austin International Drag Festival, Frankly Burlesque (USA), Popkicker (DE), and been hailed as one of the contemporary cabaret world’s most compelling hosts!

Ophelia Wilde (UK)

Ophelia Wilde is one of the UK’s most exciting dancers. A #renegadestripper whose work in Burlesque reaches into the core of emotion, whether that be joyous or painful, and lays herself bare for her audience to experience. An international headlining performer, Ophelia is an explosive talent ready to ignite the stage!

Frankly Frankie (Boise)

The driving force behind Frankly Burlesque, Frankie has birthed the burlesque scene in Boise. She received her BA in Theatre Arts, works in professional theater, and was a founding member and managing director of the Red Light Variety Show until 2015. In 2016, her burlesque productions were the ignition that ultimately changed Idaho law regarding alcohol sales and the presentation of a female body, she has been the recipient of state and nationally funded grants for burlesque productions, and is an international burlesque performer.
